Reflective Narrative
Span. 303: Advanced Spanish Grammar, Span. 305: Spanish for the Professions
There are two classes that I have taken that stand out as being significant in fulfilling the Language Proficiency MLO. First is Span 303: Advanced Spanish Grammar. I took this class in the Spring of 2017 with Pablo Oliva and it was probably one of my favorite classes here at CSUMB. As a non-native Spanish speaker, I relish in the grammar and technicalities of the language. What I lack in speaking ability, I think I try to make up for in understanding the rules of the language. In Span 303 we reviewed some of the most common mistakes made by both native and non-native speakers. For example, we reviewed the subjunctive tense and when to use it. We examined in depth the different uses of “por” vs. “para”. We also regularly did brief readings and responded to the readings with questions and class discussions. I took this class during my first semester here at CSUMB, and I remember we had to write a paragraph on a particular topic for homework one day at the beginning of the semester. Writing that paragraph in Spanish was a challenge for me. To think that in a few weeks I will begin writing a 20 page capstone paper is impressive to me. I’ve come a long way since that first semester.
The other class the applies to the fulfillment of MLO 1 is Span 305: Spanish for the Professions. This was another great class taught by Profesor Oliva. I took this class also in the Spring of 2017. At first, I wasn’t crazy about it because it mainly deals with Spanish in the workplace and in business. I have very little interest in business so, initially I wasn’t sure that I would like it. However, I came to appreciate learning about how to use language appropriately in the work/business environment. Of course, taking a class on any topic, taught in my target language helped build my language skills. We discussed culturally appropriate behavior and use of language in the workplace within the context of hispanic culture. We also learned about the importance of “sindicatos” or unions and how to develop a catchy slogan. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we learned that aplicar does not mean to apply, as in “apply for a job”. Rather, solicitar is the correct term to use when applying for a position in Spanish.
