Course Narrative
Advanced Spanish Grammar. I took this class in the Spring of 2017 with Pablo Oliva and it was probably one of my favorite classes here at CSUMB. As a non-native Spanish speaker, I delight in the grammar and technicalities of the language. What I lack in speaking ability, I think I try to make up for in understanding the rules of the language. In Span 303 we reviewed some of the most common mistakes made by both native and non-native speakers. For example, we reviewed the subjunctive tense and when to use it. We examined in depth the different uses of “por” vs. “para”. We also regularly did brief readings and responded to the readings with questions and class discussions. I took this class during my first semester here at CSUMB, and I remember we had to write a paragraph on a particular topic for homework one day at the beginning of the semester. Writing that paragraph in Spanish was a challenge for me. To think that in a few weeks I will begin writing a 20 page capstone paper is impressive to me. I’ve come a long way since that first semester.
