HCOM 324 African American Narratives
This MLO is fulfilled by HCOM 324: African American Narratives, which I am currently taking during my final semester, spring 2018. The class is taught by Professor Umi Vaughan and it is one of the best classes that I have taken. There is an extensive reading list of 8 novels, which scared me silly at first. But now, after having covered about half of the material I know that it will not only be very doable but also it will likely be some of the most consequential reading that I will do during my career at CSUMB. With the current state of affairs in our country, it is more important than ever that we learn as much as we possibly can about cultures and races other than our own. Not only have I learned a lot about the African American experience and history from the readings that we have done, but my eyes have been opened hearing about the experiences and realities of some of the African American students in my class. One boy, who is half black and works at the Starbucks in Carmel, recently shared about his experience as a young black man. He said that he has to be careful not to act “too black” with his largely white clientele at the Carmel Starbucks because if he does he can see the fear in his customer’s eyes. For him, seeing people recoil from him in fear of his blackness, is the most devastating element of racism that he has encountered. He said he would rather people are mean to him than scared of him. It broke my heart to hear that story and realize that I have been ignorant to that reality. For that reason I very much appreciate being required to take a secondary culture class so that I may end my time here at CSUMB slightly less ignorant than when I started.
