SPAN 305: Spanish for The Professions
Designed for students interested in developing a functional use of Spanish for the professions (business, education, law, medicine, social work, etc.), from a Hispanic cultural perspective. Students will have an opportunity to practice and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Spanish-speaking world will provide the cultural context, and the area of business the content area.
Course Narrative
Span 305: Spanish for the Professions. This was another great class taught by Profesor Oliva. I took this class also in the Spring of 2017. At first, I wasn’t crazy about it because it mainly deals with Spanish in the workplace and in business. I have very little interest in business so, initially I wasn’t sure that I would like it. However, I came to appreciate learning about how to use language appropriately in the work/business environment. Of course, taking a class on any topic, taught in my target language helped build my language skills. We discussed culturally appropriate behavior and use of language in the workplace within the context of hispanic culture. We also learned about the importance of “sindicatos” or unions and how to develop a catchy slogan. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we learned that aplicar does not mean to apply, as in “apply for a job”. Rather, solicitar is the correct term to use when applying for a position in Spanish.
