WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone
Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors.
Course Narrative
I am currently enrolled in the WLC 400 Capstone class (spring 2018). We are learning to use all varieties of technology to do the research required for our senior capstone project. I have become quite proficient in using the online library resources available to me through our CSUMB library. Sarah Dahlen, has visited our class for several hours helping us understand the technological resources available to us. So far, I have had the most luck finding sources using the library databases. Specifically, for my topic I have found the Latin American Studies database to be quite useful. Although the newest technologies make finding sources and doing research easier I’m still rather old fashioned and I appreciate printing up my sources to be able to read them in the comfort of my own bed and highlight them to my heart’s content. You can’t do that on a computer screen (although my younger friends tell me you actually can do that know).
In addition to the online resources, we have also become quite proficient with other forms of technology like all of the Google Drive resources including Google Slides which we will likely use for the slide portion of our capstone presentation.
One of my favorite and most helpful resources that technology has afforded me is the ability to translate and entire article from Spanish into English. Some of the articles that I am finding are quite long and quite technical making them a challenge for me to get through and digest in Spanish. If I am able to have them translated with the click of a button, that is a huge benefit and time saver for me. But I suppose if we’re not careful this kind of technology could, in theory, threaten the very necessity for our major.
